I need Video Card help?

I want to up date my old tower and I want to get a 512mb video card. i sure to go with PCI or the AGP slot... I have one open bus of each. Are they both plug and play? I have also heard that AGP is not as common but is better because it is a direct link or something... Gimme some input and educate me...btw i have no PCI-X slots
