In-Paper MLA Citations Issue?

I am in college and have written many papers. My citations have to be to APA guidelines but that is not my strongest portion of the paper. I always make a mistake with the in-text citations. I have had professors take points off for incorrect citations but I have never had a paper thrown out or been given a zero. I would say that was very wrong on the teachers part.
