How can I equate BTUs to gallons so I can tell how much propane gas my fireplace usees?

I want to be able to determine my fireplace gas usage on a per hour basis in gallons so I can determine cost per hour for running my fireplace. Also when a BTU rating is given, what is that really and how does it relate to time, i.e. is BTUs a per hour amount per minute percentage?
